The Academic Department of MSPA aims to educate prospective and current medical students on paediatrics and its sub-specialties. To achieve this, our department organises two flagship programmes each year: the Careers Night and posting Instagram info packs.

The Careers Night is an event held in both universities, HKU and CUHK every year. This event assembles experienced paediatricians from different subspecialties to share their experiences and insight into their profession. This night aims to expose medical students to all potential career choices and will hopefully prompt them to choose paediatrics. Our Face-to-face sharing resumed in 2023 following the pandemic, where we invited 8 doctors and professors who presented to more than 100 medical students from both universities.

Every year, we post several Instagram info packs, allowing our followers, prospective medical students, and medical students to learn more about different medical issues. In 2022-2023, our info packs mainly surrounded the topic of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), debunking myths about ASD and introducing assessments and treatments for ASD. In addition, we had a collaboration with HKSAN (Hong Kong Student Association of Neuroscience), where we invited Dr. Phyllis Chan, the former Chief of Service of the Department of Psychiatry at Queen Mary Hospital, to tell us more about ASD.

In 2024, we plan to hold the Careers Night on two nights in March (11 and 18, tentatively), welcoming around 100 secondary school and medical students. The theme for this year is “Walks of Life in Paediatrics: Different Field, Same Goal” where experienced paediatricians from different fields, including research, teaching, and clinical work will be invited to share invaluable insights on their profession and how they chose their career path. Participants can therefore consider whether paediatrics or its subspecialties is suitable for them, and gain insight into their future career paths.

This year, we plan to post four info packs on congenital disorders, also known as birth defects as they are a prevalent issue among newborns. Globally, an estimated 6% of babies are diagnosed with a congenital disorder, consequently, this causes hundreds of thousands of deaths. Through our Instagram posts, we hope to raise awareness and allow our audience to learn more about birth defects in general, including causes, treatments, and support organisations. This short-form content is divided into 4 topics: the overview of congenital disorders, Treacher Collins syndrome, Tourette Syndrome, and Down syndrome. We would like to educate our audience on how to treat a person with a congenital disorder with love and support.
